Kenya | Day 1 and 2

Hi everyone!

I'M IN KENYA! I arrived thursday night at the airport in Nairobi. I could see the differences inmediatley. Wow, I couldn't really believe that I was already in Kenya. Mostly because it was very dark when we arrived and of course I was very tired from the flight. which took us about 9 hours. From the airport we were going to the Guest house with a mini van. A lot of guys were helping us with putting the luggage in the van, which was really nice of them of course.
When we arrived at the Hibiscus Guest home, the group and I were devided over 2 rooms. each room has two bunk beds, a closet and even a washroom. When we had all our stuff in the rooms we actually went to sleep very quickly. I think because we were all very tired haha.
The next morning we got breakfast and we were going to meet Abdul (our guide in the slum and the founder of the girlschool that we are going to visit). He was very nice and seemed like he knows a lot of the situation in Kibera and Nairobi. After that we were setting up a program for the two weeks that we're staying. Right after that we were able to visit Kibera already. So we went there in our mini van and I could already see the differences between the city and out of the city. The van stopped right in front of Kibera. When I got out the first thing that I noticed was the smell. Which is actually logic because Kibera doesn't have a sewer. We then walked around Kibera. In Kibera I saw very different people and coloures and cultures, which I love very much. But Kibera isn't actually all fun. There is a lot of poverty going on. I could see the struggles that the people have to go through.. That was a bit difficult to see and to handle for me personally. Especially with the kids. I felt a little helpless walking through Kibera. At some moments I didn't even wanted to take pictures because it felt a little strange to do that. But on the other hand Kibera was like a really happy place. The people were enjoying there time and were playing music and sometimes they were even dancing. They were really making the best of it. Some kids were really adorable and walked any distance with you. They wanted to hold your hands and they were smiling the entire time. They kept asking 'Hi, how are you?' And they really wanted to chat and to show you things. I really enjoyed the small things like that.
The next day (today :)). I was a little bit more nervous, because we were going to visit the girls that we are going to do the workshops with. So after we got breakfast we went to Kibera again. When we got there we went to the school were the girls were. First we talked with Abdul and the principal. Then we got the change to meet all the students. There were even some boys. They were inmediatley very very excited. And we were to! We started with a workshop that a girl of the group (Evi) had prepared. We started with a game about the language. We wanted them to learn a little bit Dutch and we wanted to learn a little bit Kiswahili. That was really fun and the students were really interested. They wanted to know a lot of sentences and wanted to teach us as well :). So that was nice. After that we went outside and did like a lot of games to learn each others names. After we felt comfortable with each other the silly games began. For example somebody had to imitate an animal and the others had to guess it, and then they had to imitate an animal. It was really fun and we laughed a lot with each other. When it was lunchtime, we said goodbye to the students and walked further in to Kibera. We went in one of the little restaurants there. It was actually quite comfortable and relaxing. We had a great lunch there. It was really delicious. I had Chapati, it looks like a roti actually haha.
After we got lunch we went back to the guest house. There we discussed our program again and we did a little game :).
Right now I am really excited about tomorrow, because we're going on safari!! :)
The past two days were emotionally quite heavy but at the same time they were joyful. I am still glad that I made the decision to visit Kibera :)

Preperations | I'm Flying!!

Hi everyone!

Omg I can't believe it.. In a couple of houres my plane is taking off to Kenya. I am soooo excited, but nervous at the same time. This is the first time that I'm flying alone. I'm not excactly alone during the flight because the other girls of the organisation are travelling with me. But this is the first time that I'm flying whitout my family. That part scares me a little bit, but I think that everything is gonna be allright! I am really excited that I am going to Kenya, because with this program I am able to meet people of the slums in Nairobi. I am going to spend almost every afternoon in the slums. I'm visiting the school of the girls that live in Kibera. The biggest slum in Nairobi. Eventhough I'm in the slums almost everyday, I will not sleep there. I will spend the night in a Guest House with the people that I'm travelling with. It's gonna be so much fun with everyone!

Right now I'm still packing my suitcase and my bag that I'm bringing to Kenya. That's actually a lot harder than expected haha. I have to really think things through. Do I really nead it or can I live without it for this time. I have to ask myself this question with everything that I'm packing. I'm not packing very much though, only the stuff that I really need like clothes and medicines. But so far it's going pretty well :). I am still a little bit hyper because the journey of my life starts in a few houres from now. It sounds so surreal. But I am really happy that I went through with this. Because I am that kind of person that if you have to put work in something that I will not do it. But with this trip I did work hard to go and I am very happy that I did, because if I didn't then I wasn't starting a new life experience. And now I am. I am so nervous and excited and happy and I have all the feels at the same time. For now I am going to bed to get a little sleep before the long flight!
I am truly excited and my next post will be from Kenya :)))

Preperations | Workshop ideas

Hi everyone!

The departuredate is getting closer and closer. So exciting!
At this moment I'm brainstorming about what I could do for the workshop that I'm going to give in Kenya. I am thinking about music, cooking or something completely different.
I mailed Kiran Jethwa with the question if he could cook with us. He recently positioned himself as Kenya’s first celebrity chef with the recent launch of his exciting TV show, 'Tales from the Bush Larder'. I think that it's super exciting if I can cook with him and all the girls in Kenya.
And if this doesn't work out, I will Always have my guitar or a Volleybal.

I wonder what all the other girls and boy have in mind for their workshop.

Preperations | Ready to go!

Hi everyone!

The last preperations are done. I've got my passport and I'm ready for the flight. I also have the yellow fever and hepatitis A vaccinations given. These vaccinations make sure that I don't get the diseases. The vaccinations were pretty scary because I'm terrified of needles. But luckily the lady was very nice and the vaccine was quick and easy. I also have to take Malaria pills so I don't get infected by de mosquito. All medical care is done. Now that everything is ready and the departure date is getting closer, it is becoming very real and exciting. But I'm ready to go!

xx Nalini

Hi iedereen!

Alle medische zorg is dus nu in orde. Nu alles een beetje geregeld is en de vertrekdatum in zicht komt, wordt het toch wel erg spannend en echt. Maar ik ben klaar om te gaan!

I'm going to Kenya!!

Not a French campside, but a Kenyan Hostel for me this year.
Two weeks ago I didn't know better than to go to France for the summer. But one Facebook post changed my mind.
Will this be my first far trip away from home?
'What are you going to do there?' Is the first question  people ask me. That's a little hard for me to explain too.
According to the projects of Millenium Travels I'm going to experience the eduacition system in the slums of Kenya. What do kids learn there, what are there dreams? What could be done to help the situation in Kibera?
Stichting4Life tries to better the educationsystem in Kibera. They are also helping women in the slums with a job by educating them. I am going to wittness this wonderfull project.
I am going to prepare workshops for the kids in the slums. They are going to do the same for me :)
After I read all this information I was sure about the trip: I'm going to Kenya
Do you want to travel with me? Follow my blog
I'm sure you'll find it as exciting as me
